The Charles Jourdan Legacy

broken image

Hayley Ninnis’ mother took her to vintage auctions when she was a child. The experience led her to develop a passion for collecting vintage clothing and accessories, which she also sells on her Etsy site. One of the items Hayley Ninnis sells at her site is a pair of vintage Charles Jourdan red knee-high boots.

French shoe designer and maker Charles Jourdan entered the shoe-making business in 1921 in Romans, France. Over time, his venture became one of the leading French luxury shoe firms noted for its Jourdan designs and for producing shoes for top designers such as Pierre Cardin and Christian Dior. Opening a boutique store in Paris in the late 1950’s Jourdan reached his peak of success in the 1960s, noted for offering models in limited numbers but with a broad range of colors. He died in 1971 with his sons continuing the business.

Charles Jourdan became known as the shoemaker to the stars and was the favorite shoes of Brigitte Bardot and Princess Diana of Wales. Unfortunately, the company fell into hard times and filed for bankruptcy in 2005. Due to its popularity, the brand returned in early 2022 under the ownership of Groupe Royer, with Christelle Kocher as the artistic director.
